Chapter Eleven

When I wake up the house is eerily quiet. It’s so quiet that I don’t want to leave my room. My stomach growls with hunger pushing me to be courageous and get something to eat.

I put my pajama pants on and creep down the stairs. At the bottom of the stairs, I make a break for the kitchen. It’s grey and gloomy outside adding to the eeriness in the house. I pour myself a bowl of Reese’s Puffs cereal and load the dishwasher when I’m done. After loading the dishwasher, I wipe the counters off and sweep the floor. When the kitchen is clean and spotless, I got my room and relax. When I get there, Mittens is laying on my bed playing with one of his catnip toys. I play with him to occupy my time.

As I’m playing with Mittens, I hear something downstairs. So, I stop playing with him and listen for another sound. I don’t hear anything else for a couple of minutes So, I go back to playing with Mittens.

After a while, I grow tired of playing with him, so I decide to surf the web, but no one is online because they are all at school. Ugh, why didn’t go to school today?

I quickly grow tired of surfing the web and start a new game of the Sims 4. I finish creating my sim and starter house, as I wait for it to load there is another sound downstairs. I look at the time on my laptop. It’s 12:08 P.M. and Grandma Marjorie said that her appointment wouldn’t end until around 2 P.M. Maybe she came home early.

I stop what I am doing and go to my door and listen. Then I shout into the darkness.

“Hello? Is anyone there?” There is no sound or movement, so I call out again, “Hello?”

Nothing but silence returns my unanswered call. I know I heard something down there. I’m not crazy. What if it is grandma? What if she couldn’t hear me and she is hurt? I have to go down there.

My grandmother is the only reason why I would ever do something so dumb yet so brave like checking to see if there’s an intruder in the house. Sometimes she’s the only reason I get up in the morning. Everything I do is for her. I would be lost without her. So, the least I can do is brave the dark for her.

I step out into the unsettling silence of the hallway. In case someone has broken into the house, I try to move like a thief in the night. They would have to be bold to break into the house in the middle of the day though. Although, if someone is already in the house, then I’ve already lost the element of surprise. Probably shouldn’t have called out earlier.

At the top of the stairs, I glance over the railing but can’t see anything. I creep down the stairs being careful not to make a sound. I double-check the front door.
